The Silverstone Woodlands Volunteers improve the woodlands by taking part in activities which help the trees and wildlife of the woodlands and are looking for more people to help us. It’s a great way to learn new skills and knowledge, keep fit and meet new friends who have an interest in nature and the environment. Our current projects are:
“Basking Butterflies” In conjunction with Butterfly Conservation we are widening a ride (wide grassy path). The shrubs and young trees along the ride have grown tall, narrowing the ride and blocking out sunlight. Cutting some of this back to make the ride wide and open benefits butterflies, including the nationally-rare Wood White.
“Sunny Oaks” The woodlands have a lovely area of young oak trees but they are being overshadowed by willow and birch trees. We are cutting down some of the willow and birch so that the oaks have more light and have more room to grow.
We meet up twice a month, generally the second Sunday and fourth Tuesday, at 10am and work till around 2pm but if you want or need to leave earlier then that’s fine. We have breaks for tea and biscuits!
